NEW DISCUSSION FORUMS NOW OPEN:
A new forum "What does sustainable development mean to
you?", was opened on 24 July to coincide with the FUTERRA
Communicating sustainable development event at BAFTA.
Alun Michael, Minister for Rural Affairs, launched the new forum
outlining his personal definition of sustainable
development: "most people now accept that sustainable development
involves sustainability in economic terms, in environmental terms and in
terms of society or the community. But that isn't enough.
Having acknowledged the 'virtuous triangle' of sustainable development,
too many people and organisations then retreat to their favourite corner
and stand ready to defend business or the environment or their own idea of
their community. But 'me in my small corner' isn't good
enough. It's only when each of us acts as a champion for all three
elements of sustainability that sustainable development will
truly underpin all that we do."
On the eve of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, please give
your thoughts on what sustainable development means to you, and hear what
it means to others. Some views have already been included in the forum and
we would like to hear yours now at: http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/forum.htm.
· The "Hopes for Johannesburg" forum was opened on 15 July and
will run until 2 August. It is an opportunity to express your views
and engage with other stakeholders to discuss what you hope the World
Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg can achieve, and what
you feel will be the realistic outcomes. To take part please
visit:
http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/forum.htm.
The results will be featured on the UK Government's website for the
Summit. http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/wssd/wssd1.htm
