Dear Candidate

Thank you for your party’s much appreciated participation in our recent meeting.

GAIN is delighted that the three main parties in Guildford have given public commitment that they support an incinerator-free approach to dealing with the county’s waste.

Following on from this, we would welcome reassurance that, as well as sorting out Guildford’s recycling, Councillors will work tirelessly to influence the outside bodies that could press for incinerators. The county still has a £100 million waste contract with a company that remains committed to incinerators in Surrey. Change to the contract may be on the cards but it will take a lot of work to make sure it delivers the incinerator-free approach we seek.

To reassure the public, we are asking all the parties if they support the following undertakings:

• Give the highest possible priority to getting incineration out of Surrey’s waste contract and securing an incinerator-free Regional Waste Plan.
• Oppose gasification and pyrolysis in Guildford.
• Offer doorstep collections of assorted paper, plastic and card (and of food waste as soon as safe facilities are in place)
• Provide local collection points for foil and batteries.
• Take all necessary steps to exceed 60% recycling by 2010.

We’d be most grateful if your party could reply in writing at the earliest opportunity such that we may make your response available to the concerned public as soon as possible.
